Wait… Are you straight?

Since the time I started blogging, there have been many significant changes in my thought patterns and my general adaptation to some “queer” things around me. I guessed this is the right time for me to finally write about something that has been plaguing my mind since I had a considerable amount of knowledge of the world around me. I anyone guessed the topic of this post as one that talks about Homosexual people, you were right. I don’t want to use the term GAY as it has been cliched more than quite a few times and because I have some principles that I wish to follow.

Upto this point in my life, I have come across a wide variety of people. Some I liked, some others I hated and some others that I wondered about. Most of these people that I have referred to here are considered by many to be normal or straight. And when these apparently normal people are broached with the topic that has always sparked some heated discussions – homosexuality, their reaction has been nothing short of uncontrollable disgust. Is it wrong that these people react this way about the queer folk? It most definitely is!

Same sex is a taboo?

Same sex is a taboo?

Homosexual people are as normal and deserving as any of us other normal people can be. They choose their partner to be of the same sex. This can be due to various reasons. But I am not here to conduct a lavish research on why people tend to be homosexual. You may ask; but isn’t this kind of behaviour wrong? Apparently to most of us, it is. But why we tend to think this way is no big mystery to conduct another well funded research about. I will reveal the reason in just a little while; please bear with me until then. You may ask me how I can say so much about these queer folk and even go to the extent of arguing on their side. Don’t worry, I did not accept any money from them to do this nor did anyone offer me some. I know a couple of these queer folk enough that I can vouch for them. One of them, I know personally. The other I got to know through the glorious blogosphere.

Now I come back to the reason for our non-acceptance of these queer folk into out normal society. It is simple. Why did the other ducks react negatively towards “The Ugly Duckling”? Just because it was the odd one out. This rejection of odd ones from the “pack” happens almost everywhere in our daily life. Let me show you some examples:

  • Intelligent people rejecting the less intelligent and more stupid ones.
  • People speaking the same language rejecting the one who doesn’t.
  • Alien people who have travelled far from their native places for various reasons being rejected by the locals.
The Ugly Duckling.

The Ugly Duckling.

These are only some isolated examples. There are many many more. Why they didn’t gain this much popularity is because of this one’s close relation to SEX. Now as the post draws to a close, I wish to convey the following message to all my readers.

Though these people are considered to be freaks of nature and hated to the extent of condemning them wherever they go, they are as normal and self-realizing people as any of us straight ones.

PS: Negative comments which are written for the sake of discussion are welcome. Other bad-mouthing ones will be deleted mercilessly.

PPS: I wrote this post thinking that homosexual people don’t like to be referred as gay. My humble apologies if I have offended any of you by referring to you as queer.

    Buddy, as you said theres nothing wrong with homosexuality. Its all in the mind. .Homosexuals are laughed at, in our society; people perceive it as some kind of handicap. Its their choice of life, why should others bother?

    Nice post and I dont think anyones gonna bad mouth you here.

    I do not think you have written anything so controversial that it would bring in any flak from anyone… unless and until those who reading it are of twisted minds (read MNS/Bajrang Dal people and their kinds) and in high probability they do not surf internet as they are busy listening to crap of Raj Thackeray or busy chasing couples from the park..

    Hail ‘Freedom of Choice’ … 🙂

    if it happens due to psychological issues of the homosexual, then its fine to certain extent even tho it not “acceptable” socially. but i strongly condemn publicizing the issue. wt i’d say is – “if u’re homo, then it has got nothing to do with me unless it involves me in whatever sense”.

    sex was just a means to make children and keep humanity from extinction, later evolving to become a job done to satisfy oneself and an important means to keep relationship strong and moving. so when the bottomline of keeping strong relationships is met with, how does it matter if sex is not a very big part of it?

    msg to any homosexual who is reading this : i do not pity ur state coz of what brought u into this. i pity the society for seeing u as abnormal and insane.

    Nice post. But, I cannot figure out why you started your blog with a “Disclaimer: The material referred to below might not be suitable for all kinds of readers. Reader discretion is advised.”

    Would you have included the same disclaimer if you had written on any other issue you found worth mentioning on your blog? For anything we write about there will be people who may find it offending.

    See, there is a small minority in India who wants homosexuality to be accepted, who wants to legalize Gay marriages. We as supportive people should know it is an issue which needs a solution and that we should talk about it openly without disclaimers.
    I had written on homosexuality some time back on my blog: http://dollyabraham.blogspot.com/2008/01/homosexuality.html.

    Hi there.. just followed the link you posted at Kris’s page. I have read blogs of many straight women who support and understand gays. Then again, it is not a big surprise that many of them do not find homosexuality as unnatural or offending, coz they are better bunch in understanding and dealing with emotional matters. But very few men are actually “cool” about this, coz majority of them think homosexuality just in terms of sex and the preconceived stereotypes. So it’s very heartening to find another male soul who is normal, who has the right impression about the love between the same genders.

    By the way, we don’t mind being called “gay”. It is the word “queer” that we detest. But I’m surprised to find that many Indian gays do not know that “queer” is actually an offensive term used against homosexuals.

    Nice post. I liked the examples that you gave. It is the same feeling that people show towards homosexuality. I am hoping time and good government policies will change things. But we can change it individually by we showing the same respect to them as others. I mean we dont even have to say that, we should just try to behave as normal with them.

    @Reema
    I am still wondering whether the topic turned out good or bad. But I thought I would let my readers judge it. 🙂 Yes, the blogosphere IS a very small place. 😀

    @vimal
    Even if people perceive it as some kind of handicap, they should treat them like handicaps(no pun intended); not as though they are serial rapists or something of the like. There are many, many people who would like to bad mouth me about this topic. And most of these would be men. But I am not worried. I provided suitable warning in the start of the post itself. Long live the freedom of expression!

    @Oxy
    Oxy my man, there are people who surf the net just to find topics like these and provide their atrociously unwanted inputs. Believe me, I know.

    @SU
    I still don’t understand if you are trying to be diplomatic by saying this or that you really support it.

    @Kris
    You are always welcome dude. 🙂 Sorry I am not able to keep up with your updates. I am reading too many blogs in a very small time.

    @Dolly
    You are partly right. I would not have included it in many of the other topics. But since this one got too much negative publicity, I am not willing to further put down these people. I will definitely take a look at your post when I find time.

    @apoorva
    I think you have homosexual people confused with trans-sexuals. They are as normal as any of us. Why should their blessings be any special?

    @Crazy Sam
    I am very sorry if I have offended you by referring to you as queer. But I don’t think I will be editing the post though. However I will add my apology as a footnote. 🙂 Many straight men believe masculinity is the only worthy trait that is worth anything in this world. I cant expect these numb skulls to know anything about how other people feel.

    @Dinesh
    It is really good to know that many bloggers feel the same way as me. 🙂

    wow! tat was bold! but a nice one! :)if a person is homo, then he/she shudnt be ashamed of it as it was their choice. n if they r not ashamed of their choice, then they shudnt really bother abt wat d society gives.

    hey, is being a homosexual such a big crime in life? don’t they have their right to live as they want? The whole topic about their discrimnation in the society should be taken up more seriously than on a blog.

    Their right to Live should not be debated. In that case, everyone’s way of living would be debated………..

    Each one of us lack in one or the other thing and we tend to live the way we want… then why not Homosexuals???

    Interesting post. Wasn’t the issue of homosexuality recently raised and shunned in India? I suppose it’s high time we accept and make peace with it. And it’s not so much of a choice, right. It’s hormonal and innate. We must learn to redefine normality.

    @arvind
    Thank you dude.

    @AV
    Nobody in general should be bothered about what the society will think. But then, we mustn’t provoke the people also. By that I meant some very sensitive things which cannot be listed here.

    @MAG
    Seriously speaking, I didn’t know you would feel this way. Don’t ask me why. I don’t know the answer myself. But anyway, this topic is definitely not meant to limit itself to a blog. It is just a starting step.

    @shivya
    I don’t know accurately whether it is hormonal. But I do know that they don’t have a choice in the matter. Normality is already redefined. 🙂 By us. 🙂

    this is age old, Samurai’s were said to show such behavior. We all know that how many lives they saved. But then it was a taboo then and still it is.

    Its perfectly normal but still for the society its kind of a sin. Thanks to the education and holy books. Breaking the thing can be more than just making

    He liked my attitude and expressed his happiness for chatting with persons like me…

    but still dude.. the word gay is cool, especially to make fun of girly guys, I sticked on to it, after watching american pie..

    Yeah. Gay people like straight people when we respect their preferences. American Pie is one insane movie series. 😀 Any thing happening there is NOT to be applied in real life. 😀
