Lonely, I am so lonely…

Statutory warning: This post is in no way related to the music track Lonely by Akon.

Loneliness is the worst fear most people can have. For people who deny it, let me ask you a question. What would you think will happen if you were to be abandoned in the middle of the sea on a deserted island with no traces of getting back to civilization? Of the many this question was asked to, many will answer that it would be the best thing that happened in their life. Think again. I agree, it might be very peaceful in the beginning, but as time progresses you will come to a startling realization that you are going mad. You will be talking to yourself extensively and also with many non-living things which might look like human figures.

Anyone who doesn’t agree should and must watch the movie I am LEGEND starring Will Smith. The movie is based on a novel previously written by Richard Matheson. The acting done by Will Smith cannot be described by mere words. But I am not here to talk about acting. I wanted to tell you what loneliness can make you do and what it does to you. Anyone who was thinking about that deserted island bit should seriously reconsider.

Why not alone? Mainly because all living beings are social in nature. They need at least one other of their own species to survive. By survive, I didn’t mean the survival of the species. I meant the survival of that particular living being itself. Ever heard of solitary confinement? Ever wondered what good it will do to punish a person by ordering solitary confinement? Well, according to me it is the worst form of punishment any human being can be put through. If it prolongs, it can make the person go insane and drive him to the extent of killing himself.

At last I come to the part which I really needed to write about. How do I counter loneliness? Simple, Talk to people around you. Have you ever felt you feel so lonely even though you are surrounded by many people? If your answer is yes, that is because you want to keep to yourself even if there are people who are willing to interact with you. Introverts tend to feel lonely very often. They expect something more(don’t know what exactly) from the people around them.

Come on people, wake up! Life is not going to wait for you to open up at your own pace. Times change, people change. Try to make the best of what little time you have with the people in your life rather than waiting for something extraordinary to happen. I sign off today stating my favorite thought again; Live life like there is no tomorrow! Good day to all of you! Come out and enjoy.

    Very true Pavan. I started staying all alone in a huge apartment after my roomie left.Initially, I didnt find a problem, but now, I talk to myself a lot (claiming to my conscious that I talk to someone whos great, and I am listening to someone whos even great). I guess I drew an invisible circle around me during these lonely days and if anyone now crosses the circle and deprives me of my space, I lose my temper…. very badly. I sometimes feel I have become insane.

    seeing the change in me, my parents are in the look out for a girl πŸ™‚

    Very nice post. Yes, Loneliness is a terrible thing. Man is a social animal and if you try to be alone, it will not be very good. That’s why I love having a few friends around me all the time. It is fun.

    I’m surely not one of them!! I think loneliness is the biggest punishment!
    “Have you ever felt you feel so lonely even though you are surrounded by many people? ”
    I have missed someone’s presence a lot even if I was with a crowd and that had made me feel lonely. But by basic nature i m kinda extrovert.

    Congrats dude. πŸ™‚ Don’t forget to invite me to your marriage. πŸ™‚ Oh yes, especially for the Bachelor Party. πŸ˜€

    @Dinesh
    That’s good. But many people don’t want to have even friends with them. I pity these people.

    @Reema
    It’s always better to be an extrovert. No matter what anyone says, loneliness kills. Hey! That kind of rhymes with Smoking Kills! πŸ˜€

    @Oxy
    Let’s see. Just remain disconnected from the net and don’t use your phone for at least a week. You will definitely mind. πŸ™‚

    @Nikhil
    That’s good. Why the sad face then? πŸ™‚

    For me loneliness is killing …. but I also know of a lot of people for whom ‘two is a crowd’ ! ..they sulk, they dont give their opinions, they just dont participate – but mind you it also is sometimes NOT a psychological disorder ……

    I have read that ‘depression out of loneliness’ is one of the biggest problems in the USA especially for the elderly ……. it is sad to see and hear about such instances …:-(

    MY MOTTO: Live, like there’s heaven on earth, Love, like you’ll never get hurt, Party, like there’s no tomorrow. πŸ™‚

    Ah, thats easy… trust me, it seriously is easy. Without sounding immodest, I can say that I once in a year or two take a break for a month and roam without phone and of course without checking mails. A call once in two days to home that where I am and all that and this too cuz they insist I need to at least inform where I am.. And you call it loneliness or being recluse whatever….

    I couldn’t agree more. Loneliness is one of my deepest fears and worst nightmares.

    For the people who say they enjoy being lonely, I think what they mean to say is that they enjoy their share of solitude. I believe the word loneliness itself is negative.

    Then again, there’s a very thin line between loneliness and solitude so it depends entirely on which side one is on.

    I don’t think surrounding yourself with people will help. Its essential to reach out to the ‘anchors’ in your life at a time when you are down in the dumps.

    I called them Introverts. How I am so sure of this is because I was one myself. πŸ™‚

    “I have read that β€˜depression out of loneliness’ is one of the biggest problems in the USA especially for the elderly ……. it is sad to see and hear about such instances …:(“

    Depression out of loneliness is the worst consequence of loneliness. The only way it can be rectified is if the old people are shown at least some mercy by their sons/daughters and are spoken to once in a while.

    Nice motto. πŸ™‚

    @vimal
    Oh! But we want you to get married. πŸ˜€ I can’t see any other chances of a bachelor party. πŸ˜€ Good to know that I would be invited. πŸ™‚ Otherwise I would be gate-crashing anyways. πŸ˜›

    @Oxy
    Oxy my boy, there is something seriously wrong with your head. πŸ˜› Just kidding. πŸ™‚ But you can’t live like that forever. Why do you call home once in 2 days? It’s because you love your parents and don’t want them to worry. Forced loneliness negates all contact with the outside world. I hope no human being is put to endure that kind of torture.

    @Jane Doe
    Welcome to “Care to take a Look?” πŸ™‚ Nice point. I din’t visualize the thin line between loneliness and solitude. Almost always I saw them both as the same thing. And these “anchors” are our only respite from insanity. πŸ™‚ Looking forward to your commenting here again. πŸ™‚

    @arvind
    That was a really good bit of acting by Will Smith; don’t you think? I most definitely wouldn’t survive such a fate if it embraced me.

    With half the world going mad and materialistic what one can expect ? Loneliness is recurring dream. Adapting to it is hard initially but its more easier for an introvert. Though after sometime it will turn into something more fugly.

    Watch Castaway, its the movie that goes with your topic. I’m Legend had enough chars (veteran will smith) to made it less than lonely. Even a pet could be good companion. Wonder why old people prefer having pets ?

    I can’t believe I haven’t seen you comment for this long! :O Sorry for the late reply. You are completely right about the initial euphoria. Even adapting to the loneliness is not enough to keep you sane. and why DO old people have pets? I guess it is because they yearn for some affection from their children. But if they aren’t getting any from them, they would turn to pets. I guess the pets do a better job of keeping them happy. πŸ™‚

    I respect other’s personal space. But whatever it is that you are locking away inside yourself, is better if it is told to at least someone who is close to you. πŸ™‚

    We are born alone, we will die alone. Characteristic and nature of every individual is completely different and so comprehension and response are different for every single person. There is no another Anniyan in this world. That is why our world so diverse, wonderful and our lives full of richness….. πŸ˜‰
